A COLOR CALLED FAMILY

the world was black and white
when we immigrated here
black boat to black train.
the canadian landscape in winter
was all black trees and white snow

under a black night and white moon
mamma, papa and i walked blocks
to a paisano's to watch i love lucy
and lawerence welk on a black and white tv
we wondered at commercials
we did not understand, hawking
white cigarettes and black cars.

nuns in black and white taught me
on blackboards with white chalk.
priests in black and white saved our souls
from the black of hell for the white of heaven.
black and white smoke permeated
my neighborhood, from the foundry stacks
where papa worked.

color appeared when we gathered
for an evening meal
of white pasta and red sauce
ruby wine and green salad.
