Carol Carielli

A, E, I, O, U

They want to buy vowels,
paying large sums to buy a vowel.
It’s important to them
to have a vowel.
For them, it builds to
a complete picture.

I’ve wanted to sell the vowel.
Exchange it perhaps for something less
revealing.
Something which conjures up
a portrait more appealing.
I would even give the melodic note away because
the song they sang when they heard it was always the same.
I bowed my head and closed my eyes pretending not to hear it,
but I did.  I was all too polite.
It was a piercing song.

But now they want to buy a vowel because it may bring them fortune.
How valuable that melodic note has now become.
