Sirocco

Just now the wind has risen
over the red brick rooftops,
past long stained farmhouses
where a pear orchard swirls
bent leaves against the wind:

slow near the edge of a harvested field
a little smoke lifts
from a pile of stalks
and swallows line downwind fenceposts
driven past fields of chard:

I have come here, to find myself waiting
for a woman who does not come –
in that orchard, across the plowed field

pear leaves are letting go,
dreaming of a long
last flight, emerald and fire
down to the river
again.

And now the wind is blowing
so hard I can barely stand.
Over the Mediterranean
the heat clouds rise.
