Venera Fazio

Bastardu
– for Ziu Emilio, Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto, Sicily

As soon as the roosters awakened the day
I waited on the mountainous path leading
to the vineyards he tended
in the valley below.

My belly hallow from hunger
I called out, patri, patri
un pezzu di pani!

With breath soured by wine
my father snarled
levati di cca*
figghiu di puttana

Now at eighty, I wonder why
I longed for him to
bestow his name
when he would not
part with a single morsel.

*levati di cca (Sicilian): get out of my way
