Polly Franchini

MY FATHER

For Oronzo Franchine (1922–1960)

His name sounds like a bright foreign city,
like music, water: Oronzo, Puglian
prince. In sepia photographs, the grin,
restless swagger, black-eyed beauty.

In the Forties, he jumps a jazz rhythm
by a lace-covered sofa. He paces
past the brown rowhouse, faded faces,
old lawn chair mazes. I dream him

Astairing on Fifties counters with game
stilettoed secretaries, sipping gin.
When white shirts demark his olive skin,
he shakes the foreign i from his name.

A blue-eyed wife will give him dark children
Who’ll drink red wine and sing the i back on.
