VULCANO*

I could lie back with you

close my eyes

fly us to southern Italy where brown fishermen drop

lines from two-man boats

and middle-aged women

rounded by red wine, pasta, children

strip to silk slips, submerge themselves

in the mud steps from the shore

where others laugh, gossip under the sun

I could dare you to be the next one in

*A volcanic island and the southernmost of the Aeolian Islands, Sicily.
