Belle Harbor: Hurricane Sandy’s Legacy

My sisters’ fridge floats through
the living room
past the dining room table.
The concrete porches list leeward.
The house red-stickered. UNSAFE

From son to son to son
my sisters float like babes in Limbo
barred from heaven til the final days.

I think I’ll head for the Rockies
says the younger.
              Inland, high and dry.

The elder, to Peking
where wizened men fling open
lacquered, blue-draped cages:

a clade of swallows
whistles through the morning air
flutes attached to their tails.
