New York Edifice

Tell me you’ve never noticed the gargoyles
on gabled roofs, their tongues hanging

and lower on the façade
ornaments someone took the time to design

with dreams of shouting, “here I am”
in the carved marble curls

From their bird’s eye view
they see the air inside our smiles

watch us talk about the threat of rain
the latest losses

of local teams, as if our lives were luxurious
in their transparency, like the glass revolving doors

we pass through in suits, on our way to the atrium
airy with fountains, unnoticed skylight

we take the elevator up.
